| Physicist, born in Leavenworth, Kansas, USA. He was affiliated with Colgate (1892–8), Dartmouth (1898–1903; president, 1909–16), Yale (1916–20), and Nela Research Laboratories, Cleveland (1921–4). He made major advances in studies of infrared radiation (1890s) and quantitatively measured the pressure of light (1901). |
