| Crime novelist, born in Malden, Massachusetts, USA. After travelling a great deal while young, he settled in California, studied in law offices, and was admitted to the bar, where he became an ingenious lawyer for the defence (1922–38). In the 1940s he set up The Court of Last Resort, an organization to help those unjustly imprisoned. He is best known as the writer of the ‘Perry Mason’ books, beginning with The Case of the Velvet Claws (1933). His books enjoyed enhanced popularity when they were made into a long-running television series. He also wrote a series of detective novels featuring the District Attorney Doug Selby (The DA...). |
