| Writer, born in Munich, SE Germany. She trained as an actress before moving to Switzerland in 1933 where she founded the cabaret Die Pfeffermühle which was sharply critical of the Nazis. She married W H Auden in 1935 and emigrated to the USA in 1936. She wrote children's books, such as Stoffel fliegt übers Meer (1932), two books about the Third Reich - Zehn Millionen Kinder (1938) and Die Lichter gehen aus (1940) - and Das letzte Jahr. Bericht über meinen Vater (1956), a biography of her father, Thomas Mann. |
