| biography:
| Historian, born in Vienna, Austria. Educated at Columbia University (1957 BA), Oxford (Rhodes Scholar; 1960 BA) and Harvard (1964 PhD), he taught at Harvard (1962–6) and the University of California, Berkeley (1966). His Last Generation of the Roman Republic (1974) was nominated for a National Book Award, and his Hellenistic World and the Coming of Rome (1988) won that year's James H Breasted Prize. Later works include Studies in Greek Culture and Roman Policy (1996) and Heritage and Hellenism (1998). He was president of the American Philological Association (1992). |
