| German grand admiral, born in Wandsbek, N Germany. He joined the navy in 1894, and became a chief-of-staff during World War 1. In 1928 he was made commander-in-chief of the navy, and encouraged the building of submarines and capital warships despite the ban imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. He became grand admiral in 1939, but disagreed with Hitler on the deployment of the navy and was removed from command in 1943. At the Nuremberg Trials (1946), he was sentenced to life imprisonment, but released in 1955. |
