| biography:
| Writer, born in Mittweida, Saxony, E Germany. His first novel, the autobiographical Jungen, die übrig bleiben (1954), about children in uniform and their difficulties after the war, was well-received. Imprisoned for seven years for his criticism of the East German government, on his release he wrote crime stories and thrillers, before addressing the problems in East Germany in his later work. He moved to the West in 1981 and continued to write realistic novels set in East Germany, including Völkerschlachtdenkmal (1984), Zwiebelmuster (1985), and Froschkonzert (1987) which deals with inter-German problems. |
