| Electrical engineer and inventor, born in Atherton, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He studied at Manchester, and after war service taught there (1950–64), then became professor of heavy electrical engineering at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London (1964–86, then emeritus). He was also a professor of the Royal Institution (1967–76), where he gave the Christmas lectures in 1966 and 1974. His principal research interest was in the linear motor, a means of propulsion utilizing electro-magnetic forces acting along linear tracks. |
