| biography:
| Footballer, born in Paris, France. Brought up in Marseille, he made his professional debut for Auxerre in 1983, and won his first French International cap in 1987. He moved to Leeds United in 1991 and to Manchester United in 1993, becoming the first foreigner to win the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the year award in 1994. An aggressive and tempestuous player, his career was interrupted by a series of suspensions, and his temperament became a focus of public debate when he was sentenced to 120 hours community service after kicking out at a Crystal Palace fan who had been insulting him. A football idol for a generation of fans, he announced his retirement in 1997, and began a career in films. |
