| biography:
| British trade union leader. He became active in trade union affairs in his early 20s, and rose from shop steward in 1953 to general secretary of the Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunications and Plumbing Union (EETPU) (1984–92). He was a long-time outspoken critic of what he saw as old-fashioned unionism and concluded a number of single-union, ‘no strike’ agreements with employers, in defiance of Trades Union Congress (TUC) policy. Criticism of him and his union came to a head in 1988 when the EETPU was dismissed from the TUC. |
