| Marquis of Este and then Duke of Ferrara, Modena, and Reggio, born in Ferrara, Romagna, N Italy. The son of Niccolò III, in 1473 he married Eleonora of Aragón, the daughter of Ferdinand, King of Naples. He fought with the Florentine army in the war which followed the ‘Pazzi plot’, and opposed the pope and Venice in the ‘salt war’ (1482–4), losing the Polesine territory. He was a patron of the arts, and Ferrara was at the height of her splendour under his rule. |
