| Duke of Modena and Reggio, born in Modena, Emilia-Romagna, N Italy. He succeeded his father Francesco III and married in 1741 Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina, heir to the duchy of Massa and Carrara. He half-heartedly attempted some reforms, but when Napoleon's army arrived in Modena in 1796, he escaped first to Venice, and then to Treviso, where he died. |
