| Archaeologist, born in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, USA. A newspaper editor in the 1840s, he surveyed with physician Edwin Hamilton Davis the native American burial mounds and earthworks of the Mississippi Valley, publishing the results in the earliest classic of North American archaeology, Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley (1848). He later became a diplomat, recounting his experiences in Nicaragua and Peru in two popular books. |
