| biography:
| Playwright, chiefly of zarzuelas and sainetes, born in Madrid, Spain. With Pedro Muñoz Seca, he created the genre known as the astracanada, or broad farce, in which the comic, often using the double entendre, predominates over all the dramatic elements. Most of his works were written in collaboration, including El verdugo de Sevilla and Los cuatro Robinsones (with Muñoz Seca), Alma de Dios and El pobre Valbuena (with Carlos Arniches), and La alegría de la huerta (with Antonio Paso). This last, first performed and published in 1900, is set in Murcia. An entertaining musical, this zarzuela concerns the atmosphere of the Murcian countryside, with its typical characters such as gipsies, and the traditional pilgrimage to the Virgin of Fuensanta. |
