| Dancer, teacher, and choreographer, born in Milan, N Italy. After performing in Italy, London, and the USA, he settled in Russia (1887), first as dancer with the Imperial Ballet in St Petersburg (Leningrad), then as teacher. He was ballet master of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris for 15 years. Though he choreographed several works, he is remembered for the influential ballet technique he developed, which is still highly regarded today. |
