| Dutch politician, born in Tietjerksteradeel, The Netherlands. He became a member of Amsterdam Municipal Council (1971–8), first for the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP) and later as leader of the Christen-Democratisch Appèl (CDA). In 1978–86 he was alderman in charge of economic affairs and from 1982–6 deputy burgomaster. He served as secretary of state for housing, regional development, and the environment (1986–94) in the Lubbers administrations, and led the CDA in opposition from 1994 until supplanted by Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in 1997. |
