| biography:
| Gothic religious painter, born in Laon, N France. Documents relating to six of his important paintings survive, one of which, for a Coronation of the Virgin, is one of the most complete and interesting documents of early French art. His style united French and Italian influences, and some have attributed to him, on stylistic grounds, the most famous of 15th-c French paintings, the ‘Pietà’ of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. |
