| biography:
| Austrian statesman and chancellor (1932–4), born in Texing, C Austria. He studied at Vienna and Berlin, and became leader of the Christian Socialist Party. As chancellor, he suspended parliamentary government, drove the Socialists into revolt, and militarily crushed them (Feb 1934). In July 1934, an attempted Nazi putsch in Vienna culminated in his assassination. |
