| Classical scholar, born in Poznan, WC Poland (formerly Posen, Prussia). He studied at Bonn and Berlin, and was appointed professor of Greek at Greifswald (1876), Göttingen (1883), and Berlin (1897–1922). His many works include books on Homer, Callimachus, Aeschylus, Euripides, Pindar, Sappho, Simonides, Aristotle, and Plato. |
