| Chemist and educator, born in Holmesville, Ohio, USA. She was assistant professor and then professor of chemistry at Mount Holyoke College (1919–46), where she was not only an inspiring teacher but also an innovator in research programmes. Over several decades she made significant contributions to both empirical and theoretical problems of analyzing organic molecules with ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. Her laboratory inspired numerous young women to take up scientific careers. |
