| Literary scholar and editor, born in Vega de Ribadeo, Asturias, N Spain. A pupil of Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo, he continued his master's editions and commentaries of the plays of Lope de Vega. Many of his contributions were articles to the Boletín of the Real Academia Española, to which he was elected in 1898, largely on the strength of his study Iriarte y su época (1897), and he served as secretary from 1913. Among his later works are Juan del Enzina y los orígenes del teatro español (1901), Francisco de Rojas Zorilla (1911), and Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1924). |
