| Editor and translator, born in London, UK. A classical scholar, he formed the habit of translating aloud to his wife, and it was her interest in the Odyssey that encouraged him to start on his own version. It was offered to Allen Lane, the Penguin paperback publisher, and was published in 1946. It became the cornerstone of the new Penguin Classics, of which Rieu became editor. By his retirement in 1964, The Odyssey had sold over two million copies. |
