| Organic chemist, born near Cologne, W Germany. He had a dissolute youth, but went on to hold chairs in Würzburg and Berlin. His extensive work included elucidating the chemistry of carbohydrates and the founding of protein chemistry, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1902. He is widely seen as the leading figure in the field of organic chemistry. |
