| biography:
| Duke of Savoia, born in Chambéry, Savoy, France, the son of Carlo II of Savoia and Beatrice of Portugal. The duchy he inherited at his father's death had suffered badly from the wars between France and Spain. He was made governor of the Low Countries by Emperor Charles V and defeated the French in 1557. The Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis (1559) gave him back his lost territories and he embarked on a programme of reorganization. He centralized government, reorganized the army, promoted commercial development, and also moved the duchy's capital from Chambéry to Turin. |
