| biography:
| Strip cartoonist, the creator of Popeye, born in Chester, Illinois, USA. He took a correspondence course in cartooning, and worked on the daily strip, Charlie Chaplin's Comic Capers (1916). In New York City he started Thimble Theater (1919), a strip about Olive Oyl and her brother Castor. Popeye the Sailor appeared as a character 10 years later, and quickly became internationally popular as a weedy hero, who wins Olive Oyl by the powers given him by eating spinach. The subject of numerous animated cartoon films, Popeye's statue was erected in Crystal City, TX, a major spinach-growing centre. |
