| Dutch family of booksellers, publishers and printers (c.1581–1712) in Leiden, The Hague, Amsterdam and Utrecht. Louis (?1546–1617) founded the business in Leiden and began the family specialization in learned books. Under the management of his son Bonaventure (1583–1652) and grandson Abraham (1592–1652), the firm enjoyed success and and was appointed official printer to Leiden University (1620–1712). Notable publications were Petites Républiques (35 vols, 1625–49), descriptions of the countries of the world, and their literary classics. |
