| Medical doctor and politician. She became head of the bloodbank at Utrecht University Hospital (1969–76) and was medical director until 1985. From 1986 to 1994 she was vice-chairman of the Health Council, and special professor at the University of Amsterdam (1992–4). A member of the Democraten '66 party (D 66), she became minister of public health in 1994, and took over the leadership of the party from Hans van Mierlo in 1997. |
