| Educator, born in Antioch, Indiana, USA. He was professor (1898–1933) and dean (1917–33) of the new school of education at Stanford. His view of public schools as instruments of social engineering was controversial, but in more than 30 books he helped to make education an academic discipline and to professionalize public-school teaching and administration. |
