| US governor, born in Newnan, Georgia, USA. A lawyer and Democratic member of the Georgia assembly, he was elected Speaker (1933–7) and became Georgia's attorney general (1939–43). A progressive governor (1943–7), he ended prison chain gangs, abolished the poll tax, and restored accreditation of the state university. Later founding an Atlanta law firm, he served as director of the Office of Price Stabilization under President Truman (1952). |
