| Composer, born in Miami, Florida, USA. After studies in violin and composition, she received the first Juilliard doctorate awarded to a woman (1975). She went on to an active career of composing Modernistic but communicative music, and in 1982 became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in music. |
