| Feminist and stateswoman, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. She was an early member of the Independent Labour Party, and an active campaigner for women's suffrage. She became a member of the Communist Party (1920), but had left it by 1924, when she became an MP. She was parliamentary secretary to the ministry of home security (1940), and minister of education (1945), the first woman to hold such an appointment. |
