| biography:
| Empress (tsaritsa) of Russia (1741–62), the daughter of Peter the Great and Catherine I, born in Kolomenskoye, near Moscow. She was passed over for the succession in 1727, 1730, and 1740, but finally became empress on the deposition of Ivan VI. She was guided by favourites throughout her reign. A war with Sweden was brought to a successful conclusion, and her animosity towards Frederick the Great led her to take part in the War of the Austrian Succession and in the Seven Years' War. |
