| Painter, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. A descendant of Rebecca Nurse who was hanged in Massachusetts (1692), she studied at the McMicken School of Art (later the Cincinnati Art Academy) with T S Noble (1874–81, 1885–6), and then in Paris (1887) and became an expatriate there. She painted forceful scenes of European peasant life, as in ‘Peasant Woman of Borst’ (1891), and is considered an early social realist. |
