| biography:
| Writer, born in Alzey, WC Germany. A teacher and lecturer, she was a member of the circle of writers associated with the periodical Die Kolonne, which included Oskar Loerke, Günter Eich, and Peter Huchel. She was banned from writing in 1936 because she was Jewish. She wrote poetry containing chiefly Christian imagery, but also natural and classical works, notably Der Wendeskreis des Lammes (1924) and Die Tierkreisgedichte (1935). Her major work, Das unauslöschliche Siegel (1946), confronts the themes of individual guilt and forgiveness. She was awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1950. |
