In 1940 he set up the Department of Industrial Design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City. After working for the American stage designer and architect Norman Bel Geddes, he established his own practice in 1947. He worked for major companies such as Westinghouse, Mobil and, most notably, IBM, for which he became consultant design director.
