| Writer of the ‘Chalet School’ girls' stories, born in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, NE England UK. She studied at Leeds University, and became a teacher, and was later head of the Margaret Roper Girls' School in Hereford. Her first schoolgirl novel, Gerry Goes to School, appeared in 1922, inaugurating her 98 titles. Her fourth book, The School at the Chalet (1925), established her famous series, whose final book, Prefects of the Chalet School, was published posthumously in 1970. |
