| biography:
| Painter and designer, born in Smolensk, W Russia. He trained in engineering and architecture at Darmstadt, Germany. In 1919 Chagall appointed him professor of architecture and graphic art at the art school in Vitebsk, where he came under the influence of his colleague, Kasimir Malevich. He produced a series of abstract works, called ‘Proun’ (1919), in which he combined flat rectilinear forms and dramatic architectonic elements. |
