| Lutheran bishop, born in Stavanger, SW Norway. After some years as a teacher, pastor, and prison chaplain, he became Bishop of Tromsø and then Bishop of Oslo and Primate of the Norwegian Church (1937–50). He led the Church's opposition to the Quisling government, and was imprisoned (1941–5). He was a strong supporter of the ecumenical movement, becoming a president of the World Council of Churches (1950–4). |
