| German politician, born in Kolberg, Pomerania, NW Poland. At first a teacher, he began his political career in the German Democratic Republic as member of Freie Deutsche Jugend (FDJ), became member of the Central Committee (1973) and the Politbüro (1983), was nominated (1989) general secretary of the Sozialistiche Einheitspartei (SED), and became chairman of the Staatsrat in succession to Erich Honecker. He resigned from all official posts in December 1989 under pressure, and was expelled from the SED/PDS (Partei für Demokratischen Sozialismus) in January 1990 to face charges including corruption and abuse of office. |
