| Mechanical engineer, born in Malines, N Belgium. He studied at Liège, and in 1842 entered the state railway workshops. He invented a type of valve gear used in some steam engines (1844). He invented several other improvements to steam engines, and was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition of 1878. |
