| Chemical engineer and petroleum executive, born in Bayonne, New Jersey, USA. He was affiliated with Standard Oil Development Co (1934–62), becoming its president (1947). He was a leader in the development of synthetic toluene, hydrocarbon synthesis, and fluid catalytic cracking, hydroforming, and coking. In 1956 he became involved in the US guided-missile programme. |
