| Dutch naval officer. He gave distinguished service in the first Anglo-Dutch War (1652–4) and as a flag captain under Tromp (1653). He was killed in the second Dutch War (1665–7) at the Battle of Lowestoft when commanding the Dutch advance guard as a lieutenant-admiral. |
