| biography:
| Anglo-Saxon king of England (839–56), the son of the West Saxon king, Egbert. In 835 the Danes had begun large-scale raids on the English coast, and in 851 he fought a victorious battle against the Danish army at Aclea in Surrey. He married his daughter to the Mercian King Burgred in 853. In 856 he was deposed by rivals on his return from Rome but continued to rule Kent until his death. Four of his sons became kings of Wessex, including Alfred the Great (r.871–99). |
