| Physical chemist, born in Redondo Beach, California, USA. He studied at Princeton University, and became professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley (1946–73). He shared with Glenn Seaborg the 1951 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his part in the discovery of the transuranic elements. |
