| biography:
| US governor and lawyer, born in Alamogordo, New Mexico, USA. A lawyer in Las Cruces, NM (1939–50), he also worked as an FBI agent (1942–5) and served on the State Police Commission. The first Republican governor in 20 years (1951–5, 1957–9, 1961–2), he was popular despite limited legislative success, retiring to fill out a term in the US Senate (1963–4). He later resumed his law practice. |
