| biography:
| English nobleman, the son of Edmund Ironside, and the nephew of Edward the Confessor. After Edmund's death in 1016, he was taken for safe keeping to Hungary, and married a lady of the royal house, by whom he had a son, Edgar. When it became apparent that the ascetic Edward the Confessor would never have an heir, Edward the Ætheling was recognized as the proper heir to his throne. An embassy was sent to the European mainland in 1054 to bring him back to England; but he died shortly after landing in England in 1057. |
