| biography:
| Glove manufacturer, born in England, UK, near the Scottish border. He went to America in 1770 and fought on the American side during the Revolution. He started his own tannery in Johnstown, NY (1783) and taught leather tanning to glovemakers, which began the glove and mitten industry in the USA. He also originated the ‘oil-tan’ method for preparing buckskin. |
