| Journalist, born near Rushville, Illinois, USA. He founded the Cleveland Penny Press (1878), eventually adding some 30 other mass-audience newspapers in the first major US newspaper chain. In 1907 he founded the United Press news service (later United Press International). A millionaire philanthropist, he left his empire to his son Robert Paine Scripps. |
