| US physicist and mathematician. He became professor of physics at Princeton University (1980–7), then professor of natural sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study. A central figure in the study of superstrings, he has made important contributions to many areas of theoretical physics. His work linking knot theory with quantum theory gained him the 1990 Fields Medal. |
