| biography:
| Newspaper columnist and broadcaster, born in New York City, USA. He worked as a sports writer and columnist for a variety of publications before becoming a syndicated Broadway gossip columnist based at the New York Daily News (1932–74). Master of ceremonies for such theatrical events as the Harvest Moon Ball (1936–52), he moved to radio with Ed Sullivan Entertains (1942). Nationwide popularity followed as the host of the television variety show Toast of the Town, which was later renamed The Ed Sullivan Show, and ran from 1948 to 1971. He also wrote books and screenplays, including the film Big Town Czar (1938). |
