| Essayist and biographer, born in Eltham, Kent, SE England, UK. He became a bookseller's assistant, then a reporter, contributor to, and assistant editor of Punch, and finally a publisher. He compiled anthologies, wrote novels (the best of which was probably Over Bemerton's, 1908), books of travel, and about 30 volumes of light essays. An authority on Lamb, he wrote a life of this author in 1905. |
